Entries for September, 2009

Sketches from the studio this morning…

Made this sketch of a bull elk skull that we found in a antler poacher’s cache of elk skulls and antlers. I didn’t have time to sketch it there while hiking so I took a few photographs for later reference. I just loved the geometry and shapes of the beams and dagger tines of this [...]

Yes, chill the wine in the freezer but watch out for the bottle of grasshoppers…

Good friends came over for dinner the other evening and I cooked one of our favorite dishes - Thai noodles. Friends brought their own wine (as Jenny can’t partake on account of pregnancy and I rarely endulge anyway) and wanted to chill it in the freezer before we ate… “watch out for the bottle of [...]

a sketch from morning excercises…

A bull moose sketch from my morning drawing session…

Blackbirds and others gathering for the migration

After a very warm start to September, our resident flocks of robins and blackbirds, among others are starting to stage, or gang up, in preparation for the migrationto places of finer weather. As jenny and I drove down the lane to the house this evening the “chick, chick” call notes of the mixed blackbird flock [...]

Painting on location in the Park

Aaron Schuerr and I took off to the Norris Geyser Basin area of Yellowstonefor 3 days of painting and camping out. We had great fun, lots of laughs and only had to endure the “Bob Ross” comment twice… what is the “Bob Ross” comment you ask?… we’ll, if you remember a few years back, there [...]

Oil study of an exceptionally antlered elk from Yellowstone

We saw this bull a few times over the weeks surrounding mid-August. I dearly hope he comes into Mammoth during the rut as he has the most impressive crown of antlers I seen in some time. I did this oil study of him while he was still in velvet and grazing along Lava Creek. I [...]

A day of rest… and a flat tire.

jenny had to do some work in the office today so I went up to Mammoth to do some sculpting of the elk and then did some reading and house work back at the house. When my sweet girl got home we went out for a walk with the pups in Jardine… funny enough, we [...]

Sketches at bedtime…

As often happens, I can’t resist doing a few pencil sketches of Jenny and the dogs at bed time… everyone looks so peaceful - and STILL!- at this time of the day this is one our Casey dog.

Hike with friends in Yellowstone’s northern range

After giving a lecture presentation at Roosevelt lodge the night before, Jenny and I headed out into the backcountry for some hiking with friends. Despite being 8 months pregnant, Jenny did marvelously on our 3mile juant… she did amazingly well, actually, but allowed that that was surely her max for the day. We celebrated with [...]

Morning sketches…

Each morning I make an effort to draw for at least one hour when I enter the studio. Sometimes abstract designs, sometimes studies of master works and others from the mirror and video/photographs… all in an effort to see more clearly.
